About this archive

The Wedowee Water Works Archive is a volunteer project that preserves papers about the founding and early years of the public water system in Wedowee, Alabama, and makes them easy to browse.

What's here

The collection has 28 items and 176 scanned pages, dated 1933 to 1948. Most are town files kept by Town Clerk J. E. Perry and later mayors: letters with New Deal agencies and engineers, loan applications, the 1935 customer sign-up forms, a 1939 sanitary survey and a 1940 record map of the finished system. Some related town papers kept in the same files are included too, on street paving, public health and a few other subjects.

How the summaries were made

Each item was scanned and then studied page by page to write a title, date, plain-language synopsis, list of names and places, and, where practical, a transcription. Handwritten names in particular may be misread. If you spot an error or can identify a person, place or date, please let the project team know.

A note on historical language

Some records use the racial categories and language of the segregation era. They are shown unaltered because they are part of the historical record. Reproducing them does not endorse them.

Independence

This is an independent community history project. It is not an official publication of the Town of Wedowee or the Wedowee Water Department, and nothing here is a current utility record.
