Certified List and Invoices of Materials Purchased for C.W.A. Project No. 56-C-864
December 1933 - February 17, 1934 · 7 pages
Synopsis
A packet of local merchant invoices and a typed sworn summary documenting materials the Town of Wedowee bought for Project No. 56-C-864, apparently a Civil Works Administration (C.W.A.) work-relief project (one invoice is marked 'This CWA'). The typed certification dated February 17, 1934 lists purchases from John W. Carlisle (picks, mattocks, shovels, hoes and wheelbarrows, $55.00), R. M. Swann (nails, $7.40), E. E. Lee (3,006 ft lumber, $22.90), Handley Hardware Co. of Roanoke (8 joints of pipe, $3.20), Griffin Hardware Co. of Roanoke (100 sacks cement $70.00; sewer pipe and dynamite $16.20), E. C. Kirk (cement, $21.00), J. V. Perry & Co. of Wadley (cement and drayage, $151.20), and T. A. Perry (nails, $1.70), plus drayage paid to about twenty local men, for a total of $497.13. Sand and gravel worth $45.87 were donated. The original Swann, Lee, Handley and Carlisle bills accompany it, along with an undated Roy Dobson tool bill. The records show how a Depression-era relief project was supplied by local businesses and labor.

Reading notes
The nature of Project 56-C-864 is not stated (C.W.A. inferred from the Carlisle invoice notation); Handley Hardware bill is headed 12/1/1933 but its line item appears dated 'Jan 26' 1933; Roy Dobson bill is undated and its annotations (e.g., 'Mrs Oestar', 'JGS') are hard to read; lumber supplier's handwritten signature read as E. E. Lee from the typed list.
